Utility Company Surges Ahead with Microsoft 365 Migration
Customer
The customer is a five-service public utility authority that provides electric, water, wastewater, natural gas, and fiber services to its community. With several hundred employees and a strong commitment to innovation, the organization works to improve quality of life through efficient utility delivery and infrastructure modernization.
Environment
The customer was using a legacy Microsoft Exchange 2016 environment that supported hundreds of user mailboxes and group mailboxes. The organization relied heavily on its on-premises infrastructure for daily communication and collaboration across departments.
Challenge
The customer faced increasing pressure to modernize its messaging platform to support operational agility, improve reliability, and reduce the overhead of maintaining aging infrastructure. The primary issue was that they had to migrate hundreds of mailboxes to the cloud without disrupting business continuity or compromising data integrity. The organization also needed to ensure secure identity synchronization and maintain hybrid functionality during the transition.
Solution
Sentinel collaborated closely with the customer to execute a phased migration strategy to Microsoft 365. The project was structured into three key phases: Discovery, Implementation, and Validation. During Discovery, the Sentinel team assessed the existing environment and planned mailbox migrations. In the Implementation phase, mailboxes were transitioned to Microsoft 365 using hybrid Exchange configuration and Entra Connect for identity synchronization. The Validation phase ensured all services were functioning correctly, with mail flow, access, and compliance policies thoroughly tested.
Results
The migration to a modern, cloud-based Microsoft 365 messaging platform was seamless, and managed to enhance scalability, security, and user experience. Thanks to Sentinel’s structured migration approach, the organization experienced zero disruption to business operations and retained full data integrity throughout the transition. Employees benefit from enhanced collaboration tools and anytime/anywhere access to email services. The move to the cloud has also reduced infrastructure maintenance burdens, allowing IT teams to focus on more strategic initiatives.
