Sentinel Prepares a Nonprofit Healthcare Organization for Microsoft Migration

The customer is one of the top voluntary nonprofit healthcare organizations in the United States for people living with specific types of genetic disorders. They work to advance research, enhance care, and empower families with support services.

Environment

The customer had a number of Microsoft solutions in their environment, including M365 for their operating system, SQL Server for data storage and management, Teams for communication and collaboration, as well as Azure for cloud-based applications.

Challenge

The customer’s existing SQL Server 2019 environment was approaching end-of-support from Microsoft. Running deprecated software posed significant security risks, including potential system compromise due to lack of vendor updates and patches. The customer asked Sentinel to help create a secure, future-proof migration path to Azure Managed SQL to ensure business continuity and compliance.

Solution

Sentinel conducted a comprehensive SQL Migration Discovery in partnership with the customer, which followed a structured methodology:

Project Initiation: Kick-off and design meetings ensured the customer and Sentinel teams aligned on scope, roles, and timelines.

Analysis & Design: High-level audit of the SQL Server infrastructure, documentation of configuration, identification of third-party integrations, and performance data collection.

Planning: A migration plan was developed, including database compatibility assessment, migration mode selection (offline/online), backup strategy, and scheduling.

Compatibility Matrix: Sentinel created a detailed comparison of the customer’s current SQL Server features with Azure SQL Managed Instance capabilities to identify compatibility gaps.

Review & Recommendations: Findings, challenges, and optimal Azure configuration were presented to the customer, with a final report outlining recommended actions and estimated resources.

Knowledge Transfer: Sentinel shared documentation and hands-on knowledge transfer to empower the customer’s IT staff for ongoing administration.

Project Management: Sentinel’s dedicated project manager ensured coordination, communication, and successful delivery.

Results

Thanks to the engagement with Sentinel, the customer gained an actionable roadmap with a clear pathway to migrate from their unsupported SQL Server to a secure and scalable Azure Managed SQL environment. This significantly reduced the organization’s exposure to security threats.
