Sentinel Assessment Injects Healthcare Organization with M365 Enhancements and Protections

Customer

One of the largest non-profit integrated health systems in the United States, this customer serves patients across more than 10 hospitals and 200 care locations. They focus on serving the health needs of individuals, families, and communities using the latest medical techniques and technology.

Environment

The customer recently deployed Microsoft 365 (M365) to enhance collaboration and productivity across its various departments. This included a range of M365 applications, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams, to support their operations and improve communication among staff. 

Challenge

The customer struggled to optimize their M365 environment, and asked for Sentinel’s help to ensure robust security measures, manage compliance with healthcare regulations, and integrate M365 with other enterprise systems such as ServiceNow and Workday. Additionally, they sought to address gaps in email security, endpoint security, and user behavior analytics to protect sensitive information and prevent data breaches.

Solution

Sentinel’s consulting team conducted a strategic assessment of the customer's M365 environment, focusing on security, governance, and compliance. Workshops and interviews with key stakeholders enabled Sentinel to gather critical information and identify risks. Previous consulting deliverables, as-built documentation, and M365 integration with other enterprise systems were also closely reviewed as part of this engagement.

Sentinel provided the customer with key recommendations including the implementation of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all administrative accounts, enhancing email security with Proofpoint, and deploying Microsoft Sentinel for monitoring and alerting. Sentinel also advised on the use of User Entity Behavior Analytics (UEBA) and data loss prevention (DLP) tools to detect and mitigate threats. 

Results

The expert advice shared by Sentinel’s consulting team provided a clear pathway for the customer to optimize their M365 environment, improve their security posture, and ensure compliance with strict healthcare regulations. They were able to make adjustments to M365 that resulted in better integrations with other enterprise applications such as ServiceNow and Workday, which led to more positive and streamlined user experiences.

The addition of MFA significantly reduces the possibility of unauthorized access and data breaches by providing the customer with layers of protection beyond passwords. Proofpoint’s AI-powered email security platform creates a defensive gateway for the customer to block threats such as phishing, malware, Business Email Compromise (BEC), and ransomware.

Microsoft Sentinel AI-enhanced monitoring collects security data from across the customer’s environment and uses analytics to improve alert quality and threat hunting. The customer is also starting to implement UEBA, which establishes a baseline for normal user and device behavior to quickly detect any deviations that may indicate threats.
