Microsoft Entra Gives Organization a Clean Bill of Health

Customer

One of the largest and oldest healthcare organizations in the United States, this customer works with all types of physicians and medical professionals to promote science and the consistent improvement of public health.

Environment

The customer’s infrastructure was largely comprised of Microsoft solutions, including M365 for its modern work and related applications, as well as SQL Server for database management.

Challenge

New PCI (payment card industry) control requirements for privileged users drove the customer to add multi-factor authentication (MFA) attestation into their environment for more granular administrative controls. They engaged Sentinel to design and implement a robust solution that would enhance their security posture while being easy to manage and integrate with their existing infrastructure. This included support for multiple application use cases and remote network configurations.

Solution

Sentinel’s Microsoft Entra Private Access Jumpstart was the best solution to meet the customer’s needs. This collaborative project created a high-level plan for the design and implementation of Microsoft Entra Global Secure Access (GSA) and Private Access.

  • Two candidate applications were identified for onboarding to Private Access
  • Four Conditional Access policies were configured and assigned to test users
  • Global Secure Access was enabled in the Entra admin portal and integrated with Log Analytics for monitoring
  • Two Entra Private Access App Connectors were deployed on customer-provided Windows Server instances
  • Remote networks were configured and created three new application use case configurations for Private Access, including SSH, RDP, SQL Server Management Studio, and private websites

Results

The Microsoft Entra Private Access Jumpstart was integrated into the customer’s environment without incident. Sentinel ensured optimal coordination of resources, tracked progress, and managed timelines to achieve complete project success.

Microsoft Entra Private Access now provides the customer with more identity-centric and highly segmented controls for their private applications, reducing their attack surface and preventing threats from lateral movement within the environment. Simplified management enables the customer’s Entra identity and security policies to be applied to a variety of resources without individual application changes. Entra also provides both local and remote users with a smooth, integrated experience with MFA, enabling fast access to on-premise, cloud, and legacy applications.

The customer praised Sentinel’s rapid and meticulous deployment of Microsoft Entra Private Access into their environment, satisfying the new PCI requirements and further strengthen their security. They plan to work with Sentinel on additional IT engagements in the near future.
