Customer
The customer is a mid-sized logistics and transportation company that has specialized in freight solutions, warehousing, and supply chain management for nearly 40 years. With operations across multiple U.S. regions and a growing workforce, the organization focuses on streamlining operations and improving collaboration through modern digital tools and scalable infrastructure.
Environment
The customer was operating a legacy Microsoft Exchange 2016 environment, which included support for unified messaging and voicemail services. As the organization grew, the limitations of its on-premises infrastructure became increasingly apparent, particularly in terms of scalability, manageability, and integration with modern collaboration tools.
Challenge
The customer needed to modernize its messaging platform to properly support their hybrid workforce and evolving business needs. It was critical to ensure a seamless migration to Office 365, which involved maintaining secure and reliable email services during the transition with minimal disruption to end users as well as a hybrid configuration to retain certain on-premises capabilities while leveraging cloud efficiencies.
Solution
Sentinel partnered with the customer to implement a phased Exchange hybridization strategy. The solution involved migrating mailboxes to Office 365, deploying Exchange 2019 for hybrid management, and decommissioning the legacy Exchange 2016 servers. Entra ID Connect was leveraged for identity services and SMTP relay configurations were updated to support both internal and external communications. The project included rigorous validation, monitoring, and risk mitigation planning to ensure a smooth transition.
Results
The upgraded solution enabled the customer to achieve a scalable, secure, and cloud-optimized messaging environment that supports future growth and digital transformation initiatives. The customer expressed gratitude to the Sentinel team for completing the project with minimal end-user disruption and continuous email up time for the duration of the migration. This new hybrid setup provides the customer with greater flexibility for future transitions while ensuring continuity for internal workflows and third-party systems.
