Hospital Treats Its Aging Infrastructure and DR

The customer primarily had Cisco solutions throughout their IT environment, including Sentinel’s CloudSelectTM Cisco Collaboration (C3) for enhanced communication capabilities. Sentinel was also providing the customer with a number of different services, including HANSTM, Colocation Services, Managed Services for their DR site, Advisory Services, Virtual Chief Information Security Officer (vCISO), and Security as a Service.
The customer was using Meditech to manage their electronic medical records (EMR), however the servers, storage, switches, backup, and other infrastructure elements supporting that system were aging and rapidly approaching end of life status. This created some potential issues in the near future with day-to-day operations, and placed their disaster recovery efforts at increasing risk should a system-wide failure occur.
Sentinel designed a best-of-breed converged infrastructure solution for the customer using FlashStack from Cisco and Pure Storage. This highly scalable architecture included the latest flash storage, new switches and backup capabilities, along with a significant upgrade to the customer’s disaster recovery capabilities. Some of these solutions were deployed through Sentinel CloudSelectTM, allowing for greater flexibility and easier updates. Sentinel also worked with the customer to develop an end-to-end disaster recovery runbook to minimize risk, and activated DR On Demand to achieve faster RTO/RPO through the cloud.
These dynamic solutions ensured the customer’s infrastructure would be fully capable of supporting new and future versions of Meditech. FlashStack improved the performance of critical applications, creating a more efficient and productive environment for staff. The modernization of DR operations not only established the complete recovery of the customer’s Tier 1 applications, but also significantly reduced their RTO and RPO to under an hour. This lowered risks and shielded the organization from major financial and data losses in the event of a system outage or attack. Sentinel continues to provide maintenance and support for the customer’s environment, and advise them on technology investments. Since the completion of this project, Sentinel has used advancements to further reduce the customer’s RTO and RPO to under five minutes apiece.
