Healthcare Organization Reinforces Their Identity Management

healthcare3

Customer

A healthcare provider with over 25,000 employees that serves Illinois communities across more than 300 care locations and nine hospitals. They are committed to providing patients with world-class, expert-guided care with a personal and equitable touch.

Environment

Given their size, many of the customer’s locations had either their own individual IT environments or were part of a shared larger corporate network based on geography or specific healthcare focus. The organization was consolidating multiple entity networks and active directories into a single network and user Active Directory. They were also aligning job families and codes to enable "birth right" access, as well as combining three separate instances of Epic into a single instance.

Challenge

The customer engaged Sentinel to design and implement a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) program to enhance security and streamline identity management. They needed to evaluate and select an enterprise provisioning tool, align job roles with new and existing Active Directory environments, and develop governance structures for RBAC.

Solution

Sentinel proposed a comprehensive engagement with two primary workstreams: environment alignment and platform selection. Sentinel’s consulting services aligned the customer's job families and technical capabilities with their identity maturity framework. This included defining lifecycle and entitlement management services, mapping roles with existing authorizations, and creating a lifecycle management service for identity request processing.

For platform selection, Sentinel identified and weighted technology capabilities, qualified potential vendors, and provided documentation and knowledge transfer. The project also included the development of governance structures, operational leadership coordination, and mechanisms for annual access attestation.

Results

The new RBAC program implemented by Sentinel strengthened the customer’s security by ensuring employees only had access to the data and functions required for their jobs. These restrictions created consistency in role definition, reinforced compliance for HIPAA and other governance rules, and limited the potential exposure of sensitive data in a cyberattack. It also helped streamline onboarding, provisioning, and de-provisioning practices, reducing the burden on IT teams for identity management and improving the user experience.
