Credit Union Upgrades Their Microsoft Exchange
Customer
One of the largest not-for-profit credit unions in the country with more than 900,000 members, the customer has over 80 years of history and nearly $20 billion in assets. They aim to boldly challenge banking norms and provide wildly positive experiences for its members, employees, and communities.
Environment
The customer had primarily Microsoft solutions throughout its environment, including M365 OS, applications such as the productivity suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), along with services like Azure and OneDrive.
Challenge
The customer sought to modernize their existing Microsoft Exchange Server infrastructure in preparation for upcoming licensing changes. Additionally, they needed to ensure the new infrastructure would support future scalability and provide robust security measures. They asked trusted partner Sentinel to help configure and deploy the upgrade without disrupting critical ongoing banking operations.
Solution
The Sentinel team took a number of steps to complete the Exchange Server upgrade, starting with a comprehensive assessment to better understand the customer’s environment and what configuration changes would be necessary to achieve a smooth transition:
- Review of the customer’s existing Exchange Server organization, including features like Unified Messaging, Office Online Server, Public Folders, and Edge Transport usage.
- Review of the customer’s Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) forests, DNS zones, and Exchange Server connection logs.
- Coordination with the customer’s IT team to configure mail flow from ProofPoint to Exchange Online and subsequently to the Exchange Server organization.
- Installation and configuration of Postfix on Linux instances for unauthenticated SMTP relay with Exchange Online.
- Deployment of Azure Arc Connected Machine Agent and configuration of Entra Managed Identities and Azure Key Vault for secure secret storage.
Results
Sentinel carefully coordinated resources, tracked progress, and managed timelines to ensure the customer’s Exchange Server upgrade was completed without incident or workflow disruption. The modernization effort significantly enhanced the customer's email capabilities, improved security, and seamlessly integrated with other enterprise systems.
