City Consolidates and Refreshes Its Data Center Route, Switch, and Firewall Design

As one of the largest cities in Colorado covering over 150 square miles, the customer focuses on delivering a high quality of life for its more than 400,000 diverse residents in 450 distinct neighborhoods. The city provides police, fire, courts, emergency management, and numerous parks and recreational facilities, including open spaces and golf courses.

Environment

Prior to this project, the customer's environment included two data center locations with remote connectivity for over 5,000 employees to all city-affiliated facilities. Portions of these data centers had aging hardware that was at or nearing end of life, including Palo Alto firewalls and Cisco Nexus 9K switches.

Challenge

The customer was preparing to onboard a new secured colocation facility intended to consolidate services from their two existing centers into a single facility. Deploying a sophisticated data center design created a challenge for the customer and their limited resources. They needed to transition from legacy hardware to new Nutanix AHV nodes and implement a new Juniper SD-Data Center infrastructure with a traditional Border, Spine, Leaf (BSL) topology. This complex task required a seamless migration strategy and the configuration of advanced networking equipment to ensure consistent service availability and security.

Solution

Sentinel began with a comprehensive network assessment, collecting crucial information to formulate a migration strategy for rebuilding the customer’s network and deploying the new Nutanix AHV environment. To ensure consistent service availability, Sentinel’s solution design included the following elements:

  • Replacement and configuration of Palo Alto Data Center firewalls
  • Configuration of Juniper QFX and ACX switches (various models)
  • VMWare migration and NSX deployment and consolidation
  • Nutanix design and implementation
  • Reconfiguration of L3 routing protocol across all WAN locations and edged devices 

Results

The consolidated new data center improved flexibility and service delivery for the customer, as well as created micro segmentation to better defend against cyber attackers moving laterally through their environment. It also integrated security policies for routing, which collectively enhanced network performance, redundancy, and scalability. This robust network infrastructure allowed the customer to support future growth and meet the demands of its expanding services and population. The successful collaboration between the customer and Sentinel led to several additional projects, including further optimization of change management, business processes, and security compliance. The strategic alignment and teamwork have transformed Sentinel from a technical partner into a faithful ally.
